Winter Day

Frost jewels each skeletal branch,
Winter day chill hardens ground,
Ice droplets glisten, waiting,
Watery light to strengthen.
All is still, holds fast fallen leaves,
Darkened litter of summer bounty,
Holly green brightly shines,
Signposts to holly berry feast.
Harvest snatched on fluttered wings,
Gladdens the heart in spring promise,
Waiting, hazy over the horizon,
Season’s slow turn as the cold unlocks.
