Blizzard Watching?
A weather forecast disputed
With comparison of weather notes
Rumours of salt stocks exhausted today, tomorrow –
Chase each other round in flurries of foreboding
Add doom laden glee to steadily falling flakes.
Pensive watchers as unremitted flurries softly float from lead grey sky
Dry jests of “just a shower – quips “all will soon be gone”
Slowly give way to phoning loved ones in hope of respite,
As snow piles up on cars
To turn bright hard shapes to powder puff confections.
The joy of youthful exuberance falls short
In murmurs of roads closed, traffic at a standstill.
How wedded we remain to our mechanical contraptions
Their gift – angst ridden journeys, turned to adventure
Comfort zones of arrival evaporate in metamorphosed landscape.
The surity of recognition obliterated
Every detail burred each shape unrecognisable.
So to and fro the rumours run
Add to indecision – to stay or go
To wait in hope of respite or run the blizzard hazards unsure of reaching home.
So hours stream like days without relent of clear blue skies
Uncertainty accedes in headlong exit rush to traffic jam
Anxiety of disaster looms from each skidding wheel
Hope fades of homing before frost sets in with loss of light
Yet still there are those who wait – buoyed by long past years
Aware of lessening force, of calm to let the gritters through
So in twilight begin homeward to turn with slow and careful tread
By measured pros and cons safe arrive at home hearth bright.
Rejoicing at youthful games in landscape made deep soft and white.
