Travelling On
Dark the night, shafted by lighting bright,
I count the moments waiting- testing the distance;
A double flash – is the storm closer?
At last the clatter of rain to wash clean the land.
A triple flash – charged airs resound,
Horizon to horizon the world in silhouette;
Stands caught in the moment:
Rushes back instantly into darkness.
I count and count again, waiting for daylight,
Hope draining away in vibrating air;
Long darkness envelopes:
Blankets beyond horizon’s margin.
Slow rain falls on unlit road, unclear, clothed in mist,
The journey paused, hangs uncertain;
Chill airs swirl, driving cold deep into marrow:
Fruitless horizon search, awaits dawn,
Seeking light – In sunrise faint glimmer;
Longing labours for sight:
A moment of clarity for travelling on.
