Winter’s Day Fog
Dark lingers long,
Sunrise paused
Wrapped in winter’s day fog.
Draws chill gloom into morning
Trees swathed in lingering ice.
Winter’s weak dawn shrouded
Daylight seeps faint and damp
Frost clings to skeletal branches.
Waiting, beyond the grey.
Red dawn clouds hidden, waiting
Day this is, that lays gloom on hearts.
The end of chill postponed
Sea vista in gloom suspended.
Vanished, waiting a breeze
The world grown small in truncated light
In the waiting for day.
Shall we give thanks for winter’s day fog?
For a walk, in the damp chill
In the slow wait for spring.
For fog diffused by the sun’s strength.
When dampness gives way to spring blooms
After slow time, a frosty waiting,
Blossom delight, in hiatus,
I will give thanks for winter’s day fog.
